THE CATHOLIC JOURNALIST CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA VOLUME 68 NUMBER 2 MARCH 2016 Knowledge + Curiosity They're two fundamentals that will prepare Catholic journalists to fulfill the vital roles the Church so desperately needs us to, and the Catholic Press Association is here to help By Matt Schiller CPA President Y ou can learn just about anything online, either on YouTube, via a course library, or directly from a professional who has created a deep-dive experience on a given topic. One of the things I find most interesting and valuable about online courses is the practical application. In stark contrast to most college classes, in an online course you learn a principle and immediately can turn around and apply it. When I was in the eighth grade my dad took me to a hockey game in Madison Square Garden. We were big New York Ranger fans in those years of the "Original Six." I don't remember the score or who won. There is only one thing I remember from that game and it has stayed with me for years. Advice to remember Sitting next to me in the Garden was a man named Jake Miller. As everyone who knows me will tell you, I start conversations very easily. After I introduced myself to Jake, he asked me what I was interested in. I quickly responded newspapers and radio. I loved the news business from a very young age. I learned to read using newspapers and constantly listened to a small transistor radio. Jake responded with some great advice. He shared these two fundamentals with me. First, wherever you may be working, learn the business from the bottom up. Know each person. Know their responsibilities and how what they do relates to what everyone else does. Second, maintain a constant curiosity about what you do. Ask questions, listen and learn from others and try to figure out where things are headed Those two items: knowing as much as possible about our operations and knowing that there is always something else to learn have kept me interested and enthusiastic throughout my career. Lessons for all I share them with you because they are also what the Catholic Press Association is all about. In a very real way belonging to the association means learning as much as possible about the fundamentals of Catholic Journalism and, like all good journalists, being constantly curious. The CPA provides a very high level of networking that means you are never alone. There are other members who have been where you are and are willing to share what they have learned. Through workshops, webinars and consultations, the association provides professional training that teaches new skills, satisfies your curiosity and helps you ask the questions you should be asking. Most importantly these questions prepare us to know how we fit into the broader communications plan of our organization. We are better equipped to face future challenges. We can read the warning signs, anticipate problems and be ready to adapt to changing conditions. Don't be afraid to ask your Catholic Press Association for information and guidance. The career you save may be your own! Messengers with a mission Our roles as Catholic journalists and Catholic Communicators are vital to the Church. Without a clear voice the Church will struggle to deliver her message, to evangelize and to educate. We can't sit in a bunker and hope a storm blows over. We need to be active participants in our mission and demonstrating to our readers, our supporters and our stakeholders that we are relevant and necessary. I never met Jake Miller again, but I have always been grateful for his advice and inspiration. St. Francis de Sales, pray for us. Executive director's report Strategic plan update By Tim Walter Executive Director Dear members: The Strategic Planning Committee met in late January and met again on Feb. 24 as The Catholic Journalist went to press. The overall goal of this committee is to develop a three-year strategic plan. Three goals were established in November and this committee is working to develop two objectives for each of those goals. 1. Strategic Goal: CPA is a leader in supporting, strengthening and promoting Catholic journalism and other Catholic communications. The committee views this as an education driven goal, with two components, one for members and the other for non-,members, programs for parish communicatiors, Catholic communication students and diocesan personnel. 2. Strategic Goal: CPA welcomes and serves content creators and distributors of Catholic media. The committee views this goal as primarily membership based. It will develop objectives related to broadening and therefore increasing our membership base as well as retaining current members. 3. Strategic Goal: CPA is a financially stable organization that continues to look for growth opportunities. The committee views this goal, obviously, as a financial goal. The objectives will be around building a sufficient reserve to mitigate any future financial challenges and then to look for new growth opportunities particularly from non-member sectors. The book awards and CPA tours are an example of those. As you can see each of these goals has some overlap in it, a growing membership complements our financial stability and education programs have the potential to attract new members in a similar way that the consultation service does. Each objective will be developed with an understanding of its impact on all of the goals. The purpose in outlining the progress on this plan is to keep you up to date, but also to ask for your comments.
